Designing Your Life Through Sight

For most of her adult life, Marley Flueger blamed herself for being scatterbrained. Working from home, she’d start one task, spot another, and lose her thread completely. Laundry in the corner, dishes in the sink, unopened mail stacked on her desk — there was always something shouting for her attention.

It wasn’t until she was diagnosed with ADHD in her 30s that it clicked: Her environment didn’t fit her wiring.

Now, she clears her space to clear her mind: tidying each morning, curating a calm workspace, and taking short walks to rest her eyes. With her visual field finally quiet, she has room to breathe, think, and actually enjoy her day.

At Work

Sight sensitivity can be an advantage in the right role. Many people with strong visual processing thrive where precision, pattern recognition, or aesthetic awareness are valued: design, photography, architecture, editing, data visualization, UX, coding, or quality control. 

Wherever you work, aim for balance. Bring life to sterile spaces with a plant, artwork you love, or a pop of color. If possible, claim a seat near natural light. When visuals feel overstimulating, find a cozy corner or spend a few minutes behind an eye mask.

At Home

You don’t need design skills to create a home that supports your eyes, just curiosity about what soothes and what sparks you.

Start by clearing what drains you. Keep sightlines simple and store clutter behind doors or baskets if it stresses you. If you forget what’s “out of sight,” use transparent storage and keep essentials and joyful objects visible, like books, tchotchkes, or mementos that help your brain stay anchored.

Then, add what motivates and inspires you. Bring the outside in: Plants, sunlight, water, and natural textures can instantly regulate mood. Color carries frequency — find the ones that give you that little spark. Maybe it’s a bright mixer because you love baking, a photo that makes you smile every time you pass, or a disco ball that scatters joy across the room. 

On The Go: Seek Out Sights That Fuel You

The right visuals can wake you up, steady your focus, or bring your system back down. Plan ahead so you can use them when you need balance.

  • Curate beauty intentionally. Surround yourself with visuals that make you feel alive: art, color, or small objects that spark joy in the spaces you spend the most time.
  • Engage your visual mind. Try mind mapping, sketching, or color coding when problem-solving. Visual thinking plays to your strength in pattern and spatial reasoning.
  • Use creative stimming. Watching light move, looping animations, or soothing patterns can regulate your system and spark new ideas.
  • Seek visual awe. Build small moments of wonder into your days: sunsets, architecture, forest walks. Beauty is medicine for your brain.
  • Use light with intention. Natural light sharpens focus, warm light soothes, and dim light signals rest. Notice which your system craves and adjust accordingly.

Thriving with sight sensitivity starts with attention. Notice how what you see shifts your energy. Chase and pursue beauty and sights that make you happy. Consciously curate your surroundings to meet your elevated visual palate — and increase your day-to-day joy.
