The Push And Pull Of Scent-Sensitivity: Seeking & Avoiding

For scent-sensitive people, smell is rarely neutral. Most of us move through the day cycling between lit up and overwhelmed.

Some days, smell feels like magic. You lean into the steam from your cinnamon chai, crush rosemary between your fingers, or pull on your partner’s sweatshirt because it smells like home. The world feels alive, and every note — citrus, rain, sourdough, skin — steadies or delights you.

Other times, it attacks you. A cloud of cologne in the checkout line, exhaust from the street, the sharp tang of cleaning chemicals. Your stomach tightens, patience thins, and you find yourself holding your breath, waiting for it to pass.

Both states come from the same sensitivity. The trick is noticing when you’ve shifted, what your nose is asking for, and adjusting before your body has to shout.

Regulation: Create Calm That Restores

When a scent overwhelms you, your first move is simple: step away or remove the trigger. Protecting your system isn’t “dramatic.” You may also:

  • Soften the world around you. Choose scent-free products, keep air moving, and let your space breathe. Calming aromas like lavender, sandalwood, or sweet orange can also smooth out sharp smellscapes
  • Balance stimulation with rest. After using scent to focus or energize, spend time in clean, neutral air. Giving your nose breaks helps your system reset and recover.
  • Pair scent with breath: When stress hits, inhale a comforting aroma for four counts, hold for four, exhale for six. That gentle rhythm trains your nervous system to downshift.
  • Name it: when anxiety magnifies a smell in your mind, label it: “That’s the cleaner; it’s temporary.” This interrupts the stress–smell loop and helps bring you back to calm.
