The Push And Pull Of Sound-Sensitivity: Seeking And Avoiding

Part of being sound sensitive means we flip-flop between seeking and avoiding.

  • At times, sound is fuel. We search out certain sounds to match our emotions (enjoy happy daydreams), help focus (get that assignment done), or reset and recharge (come back from dysregulation). We may play upbeat music to shake off a heavy mood, hum or tap to stay alert, or use ambient noise to anchor focus. When energy dips, we might head to a lively café or upbeat class to recharge ourselves.
  • Other times, sound is simply too much. Some noises we avoid to stay calm — barking dogs, echoey gyms, busy airports. We may slip in earplugs, step outside, or move to a quieter spot. Maybe we switch to a softer alarm clock tone or ask others to lower their voices.

Bouncing between seeking and avoiding like this on an hourly basis can be a strain on our nervous systems. The key is awareness, so you can choose intentionally, regulate effectively, and stay in balance.
